A cranial prosthesis is a hair prosthetic designed for individuals experiencing hair loss related to a medical condition or medical treatment. It may also be called a medical wig, cranial hair prosthesis, or hair prosthesis.
Unlike a cosmetic wig, a cranial prosthesis is connected to a medical need. It is often used by clients experiencing hair loss related to chemotherapy, radiation, alopecia, surgery, medication-related hair loss, autoimmune-related hair loss, or other medically related causes.
Crown on Mane provides private cranial prosthesis and medical wig product options in a respectful, supportive setting.
How is a cranial prosthesis different from a cosmetic wig?
A cosmetic wig is typically purchased for fashion, convenience, personal preference, style changes, or non-medical hair enhancement. Cosmetic wigs usually do not require medical documentation and are generally not submitted to insurance.
A medical wig or cranial prosthesis is intended for individuals experiencing hair loss due to a medical condition or treatment. If a client plans to file with insurance, insurance companies typically require documentation from a licensed medical provider.
That documentation usually includes a prescription for a cranial prosthesis and a letter of medical necessity.
Do I need a prescription for a cranial prosthesis?
Yes. If you are planning to file with insurance, a prescription for a cranial prosthesis is required.
Clients seeking insurance reimbursement must also have a letter of medical necessity from a licensed medical provider before scheduling a cranial prosthesis consultation with Crown on Mane.
Crown on Mane does not diagnose medical conditions, determine medical necessity, or prescribe cranial prostheses. Those documents must come from your physician or licensed medical provider.
What documents may be needed before scheduling?
If you plan to file with insurance, please have the following before scheduling your cranial prosthesis consultation:
- Prescription for a cranial prosthesis
- Letter of medical necessity
- Diagnosis information or diagnosis code, if provided by your medical provider
- Insurance coverage details, if available
- Any prior authorization instructions from your insurance company, if required
Crown on Mane can provide documentation related to the cranial prosthesis purchase, but medical necessity and diagnosis information must come from your licensed medical provider.
Will insurance cover a cranial prosthesis?
Insurance coverage varies by plan. Some plans may provide reimbursement for a cranial prosthesis when medically necessary, but coverage is not guaranteed.
Your insurance company may require a prescription, letter of medical necessity, diagnosis information, prior authorization, and specific claim documentation. Clients should contact their insurance company before purchasing to ask about coverage requirements.
